ARTIST BIO

“I love creating detail in my work. I find the intricate process takes you to another place where you ‘zone out’. It is the detail in the rusty metal and peeling paint that makes me want to recreate these objects, but by placing them out in the real world, they become sureal... I hope to have given them a sense of fun and movement... to evoke distant memories of a childhood in simpler times, of metal toys and fair grounds.”
Semaphore based artist Katrina Allan graduated with distinctions from Advertising and Graphic design in 1985. For nearly 30 years she has worked as both a designer and commercial illustrator in Adelaide. She has run her own graphic design company since 1996 but still finds time to pursue her life-long passion for painting. Katrina’s more recent work builds on her love of typography and quirky objects... creating highly detailed acrylic paintings incorporating a mix of modern landscapes with well-worn retro objects ... a coin-op ride-on rocket ready to take off in a field of grass, dodgem cars vying for space in a car park or a still life featuring 1950s Bakelite canisters and the ingredients for a margarita.
Katrina first exhibited her limited edition fine art prints in the solo event ‘Acrylic’, her second exhibition ‘Steel Life’ was part of SALA 2016.
“It can take up to 120 hours to complete one artwork, so creating limited edition prints was a way to make my art accessible for everyone.”
